Buddhist Meditation Centre
Burmese Vipassana Tradition

The Dhamma Group’s activities usually take place in the Dhammaramsi Meditation Centre, located in the small village of Rivière, halfway between Namur and Dinant.

In the past, the centre used to shelter a Beguine convent and a forge. Being an island of ± 6.000m2 enclosed by the Burnot creek and the pond, and surrounded by hilly woodlands, its location in the valley of the Meuse is truly exceptional.

The centre has various buildings:

Firstly, there is the house and its superb yard, which became property of the Dhamma Group in July 2009. The house is quite spacious and enables an independent apartment for the monk with private meditation room, four large rooms for the meditators, an office with open fire, a kitchen and a dining room.

On the other side are the buildings which the Dhamma Group has been using for its residential activities, and which the association will continue to rent, since 2003 : the « Beguine convent », a long building comprising the dining room, the kitchen, the office and on the first floor, the apartment of the monk, the bedrooms and the bathrooms. Furthermore, there is the « Workshop », totally renovated, with a meditation room of 65 m2 and two dormitories for 8 persons. At the other end we find a disused Chapel, a magnificent space which is ideal for practising walking meditation. On the other side of the court yard, the ancient forge with its water turbine producing green electricity. The inner courtyard is quiet and peaceful, away from the traffic.

A little history
Shortly before his death, Venerable Dr. Rewata Dhamma gave the new Centre its current name : Dhammaramsi (« Light of the Dhamma ») Meditation Centre, in order to emphasize its connection with the Saddhammaramsi Centre in Yangon, Burma, and its attachment with the pure Burmese Buddhist tradition. With its 2 Buddha statues offered by its founder Dr. Rewata and by the Venerable Sayadaw U Paññathami, our centre splendidly demonstrates its determination to spread the Light of the Dhamma in Belgium.
